Ernest Jose Abara, 76, of Captain Cook died Feb. 15 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in Laoag City, the Philippines, he was a houseman at Royal Kona Resort and member of Ilocano Ancestry Club, Unite Here Local 5 union and St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kealakekua. Mass at 6 p.m. Refreshments to follow. Casual attire. Survived by sisters, Francisca Delo Santos and Dominga Guillermo of Captain Cook, Margarita Medina of the Philippines; nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces, grandnephews, and two great-grandnieces. Shizue “Granny” “Mom” (Sakuda) Oshiro, 90, of Kalopa Makai, Paauilo, and Palm Springs, Calif., died Feb. 23 at home in Kalopa. Born in Haina, she was a retired farmer and member of Paauilo Hongwanji Mission. Visitation 9:30-10 a.m. Saturday (March 26) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 10 a.m. Survived by son, Jamieson (Micki) Oshiro of Hilo; daughters, Mary Ann (Richard Ragocos) Vasquez of Hilo, Faith Keiko Payne of Waimea, Lynn (Jay) Oshiro of Palm Springs, Calif. and Kalopa, and Grace (Rufo “Rudy”) Pajimola of Pepeekeo; daughter-in-law, Faith Oshiro of Hilo; sister, Shirley Fumiko Nishimoto of Honolulu; sisters-in-law, Alice Haruko Kobayashi of Hilo, Lillian Sadako Keone of Manoa, Oahu, and Jeanne Oshiro of Honolulu; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren. Yoshimi Horie Uyeda, 96, of Waimea died March 12 at Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua in Honokaa. Born at Puuoo Ranch in Hilo, she was retired from the former Kamuela Vegetable Stand and a member of Kohala Koboji Mission, Kamuela American Japanese Civic Club and Kamuela Senior Citizens. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Thursday (March 24) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Funeral service at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by son, Vernon (Sharon) Uyeda of California; daughters, Alice (Harry) Moromisato and Velma von Bloeker of California; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
